In
the centre of Thrace, Komotini struggles to keep balance between
traditional and contemporary reality.
The existence of the ancient town on the sites of the present-day
town dates from the 4th century A.D. , from the Emperor Theodosius
É (379-395 A.D.) . Komotini evolved gradually into a commercial
centre on account of its position on the Via Egnatia and its present-day
name was first mentioned by the Emperor John VI Cantacuzenos and
by the Historian Nikiphoro Grigora . Its present-day style was obtained
in 1870. Since then it has developed economically and geographically
and today it is the headquarter of the Region of Eastern Macedonia
and Thrace.
The TRADITIONAL HOTEL ASTORIA is located in the
heart of the town.
In front of it , ‘Square of Peace’ extends with its natural beauty,
its perennial plane-trees , its pedestrian zones , the marble avenue
of parade , the small theatre and the fountain .
The hotel is a historical preservable building which was built in
1900 and it was designed by an architect called Othonas . It was
made into a hotel in 1937 by Nikolaos Papatheodorou and it was fully
renovated by Bros Papatheodorou Ltd in 1993 and 2009 and it is
run with its present-day style .
It belongs to the category A' class of Traditional Lodgings and its luxury
astonishes the visitor of Thrace.
Reaching the Central Square of the town , the visitor faces a beautiful
traditional building with architectural structure and suitable lighting.
It is said that the hotel is the jewel of the Central Square of
the town .
